Jakub Wendland, 32, used his dog as a ‘weapon’ to attack a man and a woman in Manchester
A man who set his dog on a two Muslims shouting ‘they kill people’ has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.
Jakub Wendland used his cross-breed bull terrier dog to target a man coming out of a mosque and a short time later set it on a woman: “Go on, bite her. They kill people, bite her!”
The 32-year-old, a driver living in Rochdale, then spat in the faces of two police officers as they arrested him following the attacks in Manchester.
The incident came a month after the terror bombing at Manchester Arena during a time police reported a large spike in anti-Muslim hate crime.
The court heard at around 10.40am on June 25 Wendland set his dog, a cross between an English and a Staffordshire bull terrier, on a man leaving a mosque near to Crowcroft Park in Longsight, Manchester.
The dog bit him on the arm and Wendland then punched him once to the face.
Around two hours later Wendland blocked the path of a woman near the Debenhams Metrolink Stop in Manchester city centre, repeatedly telling his dog to bite her because she was Muslim.
Passers-by intervened preventing the dog from attacking.
Police officers detained Polish national Wendland outside the Metrolink on Corporation Street and arrested him for having a dog dangerously out of control in a public place.
He reacted by spitting in their faces.
The defendant later admitted two racially aggravated public order offences, being in charge of a dog that caused injury while dangerously out of control, being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control, assault by beating and two counts of assaulting a constable in the exercise of his duty.
Wendland was also disqualified from keeping a dog indefinitely as he was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court last Friday.
Kirsty Walls from the Crown Prosecution Service said: “Jakub Wendland used his dog as a weapon as he carried out a series of unprovoked attacks in a busy city centre upon people he considered to be Muslims.
“He was heard repeatedly telling the dog to bite Muslims as they kill people.
“One person was injured, whilst another was placed in tremendous fear of being attacked by the dog. He then assaulted police officers by spitting at them as they arrested him.
“The Crown Prosecution Service takes all forms of hate crime very seriously, and presented the case to the court as a religious hate crime.
“The judge concluded that the defendant and the offences he committed were racist and sentenced him to two-and-a-half years’ imprisonment.”
