Tell Mama.jpgGreater Manchester has seen a 15% rise in anti-Muslim incidents and attacks over the last year, and this week, which also featured Holocaust Memorial Day, saw the Manchester launch of the UK’s first Anti-Hate National Youth Leadership Programme.

Backed by MP Andy Burnham, who said “The UK has no place for hatred of any type”, the programme, which supports young people to challenge, report and overcome hatred, intolerance and prejudice, is backed by Tell MAMA, the only anti-Muslim hate monitoring organisation in the country.

As Donald Trump fuels anti-Muslim issues in America, closer to home, in Greater Manchester, Tell MAMA (Measuring Anti-Muslim Attacks) has received more than fifty reports of anti-Muslim incidents and attacks between January and November 2016, a 15% increase in street-based cases. The organisation also saw a spike in anti-Polish and racist incidents against African Caribbean women.

This week, Tell MAMA, the UK’s only anti-Muslim hate monitoring organisation, launched its National Youth Leadership programme in Manchester, the first of its kind in the country, which is designed to support young people in being confident and resilient enough to challenge, report and overcome hatred, intolerance and prejudice both online and offline.

The programme was launched at a conference that took place at the Manchester Central Convention Hall and brought together politicians, interested groups and hate crime victims who shared their experiences.

Speakers at the conference included Baroness Williams of Trafford and MP Andy Burnham who said “The UK has no place for hatred of any type…I believe we all have a responsibility to stand up to hatred in all its forms.”

Cabinet Minister and National Chairman of Tell Mama, Shahid Malik, added: “There can be no more important fight in our country than that against hatred and bigotry – it blights the life of far too many and it is crucial that young people play a key leadership role in this struggle.”

Islamic Center of Davis vandalized; incident probed as hate crime

Omar Abdel-Ghaffar was jolted from sleep early Sunday by calls and texts that the local mosque in Davis, directly across from the University of California campus, had been vandalized.

The windows at the Islamic Center of Davis had been shattered. Bacon had been wrapped around the door handles of the main entryway — a sign of disrespect, as pork is forbidden in Islam. Bike tires were slashed.

“This is where we grew up,” said Abdel-Ghaffar, born and raised in Davis and a fourth-year UC Davis student. “To see that anger. All of those cracks, the shattered glass. The sheer anger was really scary.”

Muslim Marine Answers Questions In Effort To Fight Islamophobia

Mansoor Shams is comfortable with a variety of labels.

He’s a veteran, who served in the U.S. Marines from 2000 to 2004. He’s a small-business owner. He’s a Muslim youth leader. And now he’s an ambassador — self-appointed.

Shams is traveling around the country with a sign that says, “I’m A Muslim U.S. Marine Ask Anything.”

He says the most common questions are related to the Islamic stance on Sharia law, women’s rights, ISIS and homosexuality. While the questions aren’t always informed, Shams tells NPR’s Ari Shapiro that he still believes these conversations have led to something positive.

“There’s a lot of assumptions that are made, unfortunately, when people see a Muslim,” he says. “But what I found is that the conversation, the dialogue, has for the most part led to something very fruitful.”

CAIR Reveals: Disgraced Islamophobic Former FBI Agent Drafted Original ‘Muslim Brotherhood’ Bil

WASHINGTON, – The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today revealed that the original draft of Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) controversial “Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act” was written by a disgraced former FBI agent who has made a career out of bashing Muslims and Islam.

ACTION REQUESTED: Click here to urge your congressional representative to reject this anti-Muslim bill.

An Islamophobic website (WND, 11/23/2014) reported that John Guandolo, who claims that former CIA Director John Brennan is a “secret Muslim,” “helped draft the [original] anti-Brotherhood bill” for then Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-MN).

CAIR Islamophobia Monitor: John Guandolo

“The fact that Senator Cruz’s current legislation has its origins in the conspiracy theories of a notorious Islamophobe serves to prove that the bill is designed as the basis for an anti-Muslim witch hunt, not as a legitimate defense of national security,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw.
